It is possible to change layer settings on external reference drawings ( xref ) in the main drawing. Whether or not these changes are retained between sessions is controlled by the system variable VISRETAIN. This variable is set in the main drawing.
The settings for VISRETAIN are:
0 - Any changes that are made to an xref layer will not be saved between sessions. The next time the drawing is opened, the xref will reload the layer table from the original external reference drawing. 1 - Any changes that are made to an xref layer will be saved and restored in the next session. This includes changes such as On/Off, Freeze/Thaw, Colour, Linetype and Lineweight.
Changes made to xref layers will not affect the original external reference drawing.
This variable can also be set to 1 by going to the menu , and ticking the box Retain changes to Xref layers.
