Go to the Layer Properties Manager. To do this, click the button on the Layers toolbar.

Click the New Layer button in the Layer Properties Manager. A new layer will appear in the layer list.
Tip: Your new layer will be given a default name. Always change this before leaving the Layer Properties Manager to avoid confusion. Alternatively, you can create a new layer using the command line like this:
Command Sequence
Command: -layer Enter an option [?/Make/Set/New/ON/OFF/Color/Ltype/LWeight/MATerial/Plot/Freeze/Thaw/LOck/Unlock /stAte]: n Enter name list for new layer(s): (enter a name for the new layer) Enter an option [?/Make/Set/New/ON/OFF/Color/Ltype/LWeight/MATerial/Plot/Freeze/Thaw/LOck/Unlock /stAte]: (Enter to end command)
Note: The hyphen command prefix forces the command line version of the command. Entering "layer" at the command prompt will bring up the Layer Properies Manager whereas entering "-layer" starts the command line version. This is useful if you ever need to create a new layer using a script.
