First, check that the object that can not be deleted is not on a "locked" layer. Use the command LIST to find out what layer the object is on. Locking a layer will prevent deletion of any entity on that layer.

To check if the layer is locked or not, go to Layer Properties Manager, and check the layer there:

If the layer is not locked, and the object still can not be deleted, then proceed with the following:

Check the setting of the PICKFIRST variable. This variable controls whether objects are selected before or after a command is issued.

The settings are:

0 - Select objects after the issue of a command.
1 - Select objects before or after the issue of a command.

Generally, PICKFIRST should be set to 1

Another way to set PICKFIRST is to go to the menu TOOLSOPTIONSSELECTIONSelection ModesNoun/Verb check box. If checked, PICKFIRST is set to 1.
