To locate a .BAK file, ensure hidden files are set to 'show'.
In Windows Explorer, go to ToolsFolder optionsView and in the Advanced settingsHidden Files and Folders unclick 'Hide extensions for known file types', otherwise the renamed file will become filename.dwg.bak and will not open in AutoCAD.
Oncehidden files are set to 'show', use the Windows Explorer search function to locate the .BAK file.
It is a good idea to copy the .BAK file to another folder to ensure you have a backup of the .BAK file.
Rename the file to any other name, such as filename-1.dwg - it should now open in the usual manner.
Follow the same process to utilise an autosave file .sv$

I tried what you are explaining here but cannot change to a .dwg file it just renames the file name.dwg and not the actual file association just the display name. (Please take your question to cadtutor.net/forum-Tiger-080516)

When I go to Recycle bin I keep getting a list of bak. files in there which I have not deleted (some relate to Outlook Express)
Any idea why
I simply delete them permanantly & I have found no problems with my PC
