thanks for the link.... i printed that out for my own use. i deal with arch drawings all the time, good to see how the layer system truely works, and what they really stand for. granted, i figured out most, but some where a little hard to figure. lol

Are you looking for actual layer definitions, or just a set of names? You can save yourself a lot of time by creating a prototype or template drawing that already has the layers you need.
In our office we use the layer-naming standard from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, which is very similar to the AIA standard referenced by lpseifert above (no surprise, since it's based on the AIA standard). You can get it emailed to you from here:

Thanks big-time for that link... there has been a good bit of fighting among the CAD users here in the office in how to label layers... this will help to finally get some good standards going around the office here...

When I worked in an Architects office, mainly space planning,the idea was any cadder could open a plan and edit it. So everyone used the same naming convention and linetype scales.
