i have a drawings which have xrefed drawings. the original drawings which are xrefed have all the layers on and i cannot edit them. (they are also on a different network path)
when i turn off the layers i don't need on my drawing and save, close and open the drawing again the layers are on again (and there are a lot of layers to turn off)
is this because the xrefed drawings are saved with all the layers on? maybe there is a system variable i am missing?
to speed up things i created a script file that turns off all the layers i don't need

Try setting VISRETAIN=1
Can also be found in OPTIONS > OPEN & SAVE > EXTERNAL REFERENCES > RETAIN CHANGES TO XREF LAYERS.

20 yrs w/ Acad... started using version 2.something. I had to load with 5.25" floppies each session- no hard drive.

I would say I know a fair amount, but when I see what some of these guys know...it leaves me standing!
Some people are so far ahead, they are out of sight!
You'll ALWAYS get encouragement here and, thank god, a laugh as well.
It is such a boost when you get a solution.
Even the guys with rows of pips next to their name will admit to learning something new.
NOBODY knows it all, somebody will know something and everybody benefits!
