Using AutoCAD 2000i.

Here is the issue.

In our layouts we have a standard template with an area on the side for notes. This area has some default notes, basically acting like place holders. For example here is what one of them says.

INSTALLATION NOTES
TO BE INSTALLED LEVEL AND PLUMB. FASTEN SECURELY TO WALL.
FILL ALL NAIL/SCREW HOLES.
CAULK JOINTS AS NEEDED.
TOUCH UP FINISH AS NEEDED.That is one MTEXT object. Now our draftsman who made the template has no trouble here, but all the rest of us do.

If we edit that to say... "Touch up finish at extra cost." Everything looks right until we press OK, then this happens.

INSTALLATION NOTES
TO BE INSTALLED LEVEL AND PLUMB. FASTEN SECURELY TO WALL.
FILL ALL NAIL/SCREW HOLES.
CAULK JOINTS AS NEEDED.
TOUCH UP FINISH AT EXTRA COST.The underlining continues to the end of the object. Even if we change nothing, just opening the editor, and then press OK the underline runs to the end.

It is not a serious problem, but i know it can be stopped, since one of us can edit them without this happening. We just dont know how he can do it. Niether does he.

I have run into this same exact problem and I even posted about it a week or so ago. Pretty much all I got was that there is no quick and easy solution, and solutions I did get were not worth the time to fix that problem EVERY time it happened. Someone did mention that that issue was fixed in 2000i though... so maybe there's hope. My only work around is just making the entire text "UN-underlined"... then just drawing a line under the top text item =P

Edit: Is your drafstman using a different version of AutoCAD than the rest of you?

oh i have used our template on 2004, 2006, and 2007 and there is no problem there.

But we have four workstations running 2000i here. 3 of them have this problem one of them does not.

it was a known issue on 2000 and was fixed in 200i and above. There is no fix other than upgrading

:) like i said, we are running 2000i. So the problem should be fixable, but the problem is HOW to fix it. Is there a system variable that controls this? Or some other option somewhere that might be swithced on or off?

as far as I can remember it was something to do with 2000 and Windows. It was so long ago now I can't remember the details
there was no magical system setting which cured it.
other than checking you have all the correct service packs, there's nothing more you can do. The program is obsolete as far as Adesk is concerned so there isn't going to be any other fix available

Drag and hi-lite ALL of the text then click the underline button twice (or as many times as it takes to UNPRESS the underline button - could be once)

Then select ONLY the test you want underlined, press the underline button, then click OK

in the MTEXT box everything looks fine. But when i press OK, everything is underlined. I have studied this problem a good bit, and have even found this little oddity.

If i were to just want the word notes to be underlined, then this would happen.

I dont know how many of you do HTML or other markup languages, but it is acting like the "underline tag" is never being closed.

to bypass, you could try using the FIND command (if it is there in 2000i.) ---->Find Enter the word or phrase to replace then type in what you want to replace it with. see of that works....I can't remember if that version has it though.

well now that idea worked.

am still wondering why one of our 2000i machines doesnt have this problem when they rest do

I have sometimes noticed even in newer versions, such as 2004 (which we use in our office currently) that this happens. One day it will work fine, the next....nuttin....it is bizarre. You could also try deleting all of the instances in a particular drawing (you said it was a block correct?) then purge the drawing, followed by an audit, then try re-inserting it. I know its a bi*&% but see if reinserting it works. If it does work, you won't have to use FIND all the time.

Are all your 2000i machines patched with service packs? A quick search on Autodesk's website suggests that as the fix.
