Anybody know how to make an xref's layers disappear from the drop-down when you unload it?

Have you tried to purge you drawing yet? Failing that goto the xref manager and detach the unwanted xref, then purge again.

No, that's not what I mean. Sometimes, when I unload an xref, its layers disappear from the layer pull-down. They come back when I reload (as they should). This is nice, because it reduces screen clutter. Other times, the layers are still visible even though the xref is unloaded. They're not supposed to be purged or anything. I'd hoped there was a system variable or something for this, but I haven't found one.

inside the layers dialogue box, there is a section you can set filters to show only the layers you want. Its called named layers filter.
Check the help files for further info

I know about filters -- I just seem to remember that this used to happen automatically.

No apology necessary -- just wish there was a way to make it happen. :-)

hi There
Katie
do you get the same result with the unloaded layers showing
if you save, close the dwg and then re-open the dwg file??
not sure if this will make any difference
it seems sometimes that if you do an unload the layers still hang in there
until the dwg is re-opened

I don't know if it is too late for you.
You may use the filter drop down menu,
select the "show all Xref dependent layers" and check the boxes besides filter "invert filter" and "apply to object properties"
It is working for me.

Have you tried VISRETAIN?
To keep the Xref’s layers separate from the current drawing’s layers, AutoCAD uses the Xref’s file name as a prefix to each of its layers. This prefix is separated from the layer name with the pipe symbol “|” as in “site|CREEK” or “site|trees.” Every time the Xref is loaded, or reloaded into the current drawing, as when opening a drawing that has an Xref or using the reload option of the Xref command during an editing session, AutoCAD reads the Xref’s current layer settings and sets the current drawing’s Xref layers the same. However, the user has complete control over those settings in the current drawing. For example, the user could change the colors or visibility (on/off, thawed/frozen) of any Xref’s layers independently. To retain custom settings and always have them the same in the current drawing, regardless of what they may be in the Xref drawing itself, the user must set the AutoCAD variable VISRETAIN (visibility retain) to 1 (the default is 0) in the current drawing. Setting VISRETAIN to 1 will preserve all Xref layer settings from editing session to editing session of that drawing, regardless of any settings in the Xref. However, any layers deleted from the Xref will, of course, not be retained—it can’t show what it doesn’t have. To set the VISRETAIN, type VISRETAIN at the command prompt, then enter the new value—1 to retain custom settings, 0 to retain the Xref’s settings. This variable can be different in each drawing.
