I recently recieved some drawings as Autocad plot files(.plt) I am unsure how to open these files. Is there anyone who could shed some light on this for me.
Thank you very much.

.plt files are meant to be sent to the printer/plotter, although there is an express tool (under File Tools) to convert from .plt to .dwg (it has it limitations though).
If you want to send them to a plotter here is a link for a utility to do so.

Try the PLT2DWG command. It's an express tool. It will import the files into AutoCAD. I think it only supports HPGL files, not hpgl/2. It's very limited but give it a try.
I would request DWG file. If they won't give you a DWG file, see if they will send you DWF or PDF.

siderus,
The path below is from Autodesk Knowledge base and describes how to copy files to a printer / plotter on your network.

Hope this is of help.

You can also look for Oce Client tools, which is what most printing companies, in the US, use to print from. This will let you look at the plot file but thats it. This is a good tool for checking the prints as well. Try here: http://www.oceplancenter.com/download.asp this looks like what we downloaded a few years ago but newer. Hope this helps.

yes that is what i would recommend too get OCE reprodesk to view them with
and to bundle them up and send them to print if need be. any print shop will give you this tool for free
did he send a OCE pen set? if they are autoHPGL then this is not a problem

As everyone has pretty much said, PLT files are made to be plotted.
However, there are some viewers out there if you just want to see them without printing them.
I created a list of them here:
