When a command is chosen, the cursor is tracking with "ghosts" and the only way to get rid of them is to zoom in or out. What is this called and how can I turn it off? The screen becomes plastered in a few shorts seconds.

Doug,
sounds to me like a display driver problem. You shouldn't be seeing any ghosting of the cursor.
Unless you mean that you get small crosses where you pick. If this is the case, you are working with something called "BLIPMODE" turned on. To turn this off, enter "BLIPMODE" at the command prompt and enter "OFF".
Let me know if this helps.

You don't perhaps have an nVidia video card, say a TNT2 M64? I had this card in my work machine for a while and I would get similar ghosts. I have since moved on and don't get them anymore. Whatever card you have David is correct in getting up-to-date drivers and try that. Good luck.

1) When it happens type the command STATUS. It will tell you various resources and there efficiency, it may point to a problem eg temp drive problem or RAM problem.
2) Try turning down HARDWARE ACCELERATION in the Windows - System - Graphics - settings.
