First of all, hello first post!

Background: I recently bought a new laptop and installed ADT 2004 on it for work and school. Starting to tech myself some 3D modeling because my physical model making skills are pathetic, at best, and a pretty picture would improve my grade (and maybe my paycheck one of these days).

Problem: I try to open Viz render and I get an application error. Can't click on the icons and can't open it within Autocad. I have no idea how to patch Autocad so this might have been fixed if there are updates but it seems Autocad doesn't automatically download and install and I have had limited success finding and applying patches. I tried installing one and it said I needed the CD (which I can get tomorrow but I don't know if that's normal or not).

Another site said I should add an environment variable but either I'm doing it wrong or it just doesn't work. Basically I have no idea what's going on and I'd love to be able to fix it at home instead of spending a lunch break patching my laptop but if it has to be done it has to be done.

Anyway, any help would be more than appreciated and until then I'll go back to the 3D work and forget about texturing.

Hmm, not sure of a patch to fix this. I would try to reinstall/repair the ADT/Viz Render when you get a chance. Does ADT give you any error messages?

Here is a link for the ADT patches/downloads

Good luck.

Error message:
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000005). Click on OK to terminate the application.

I tried applying service pack two this morning and it didn't fix the problem and none of the other available patches seem to address it.

EDIT: I found the readme for service pack 1 and it says it fixes Viz crash issues, however, SP2 also says I don't need to install SP1 for it to work. Does that mean it's a full update or they are separate because I did successfully install SP2, however, the error remains. Also, I can't find a download for ADT 2004 SP1 anywhere, autodesk seems to have forgotten it's existence.

Never mind, problem solved. To give credit where credit is due: http://discussion.autodesk.com/thread.jspa?messageID=529400

You have to:

Right click on 'My Computer'
Click on 'Advanced' tab
Click on 'Environment Variables'
Click 'New' under 'User Variables'
Variable Name: NO_3DSMAX_SPLASHSCREEN
Variable Value: 0 (the number zero)

Well, I was going to post this...

http://download.autodesk.com/prodsupp/downloads/adt2004unlsp1enu.exe

I replaced the "2" in the line with a "1" and low and behold it started to download ;)

Ha! That's great, I would never have thought about that.
