Does it have to be a field?

yes the fields are text i.e I have a drawing showing a cable with a tag number .That number if I update it would update the other drawings that have that same cable

Ok, first you said "update other pages" (which to me means other layouts) - then in your second message, you say "update other drawings".
So are we talking about updating text in the same drawing, but on different layouts -or- text in different drawings?

Yes I update the text field on one drawing (layout) and that text field will update on the other drawings(layouts) -I heard a visual Autocad program is needed

The easiest way would be to make a separate drawing out of the "field" - then xref that into all the drawings where it's needed.
Is this something like text that goes in a title block or something? In that case, Sheet Set Manager can do what you want.
