Hi Everyone,
I have my automatic save in Autocad set to save every 5 minutes. I've noticed, however, that the automatic save doesn't save if you are manipulating Autocad in any way. It seems it only saves when Autocad is idle. Has anyone else noticed this phenomena? Is there a toggle I'm missing somewhere that makes it save even when your working?

I don't know about a toggle but mine Autosaves when I work and doesn't when it is idle.
Mine is set for every 15 minutes, I don't think I work fast enough to justify an autosave every 5.

haven't noticed it only saving when idle., i have noticed it only seems to autosave the "live" drawing, if you have more than one open it will only save the one you are actually working in at the time of autosave, which is a pain becuase when it crashes it crashes everything

which is one reason I prefer to work in SDI mode most of the time.
I had always thought that autosave worked every <time delay> unless the drawing hadn't changed. Must check sometime today. I have mine on 10 minutes. Earlier AutoCADs had the default set to 120 minutes. Guess how often our network would crash at 115 minutes. :x

The reason it only saves when you're idle is because you wouldn't want it to save when you're halfway through a command.
Civil 3D, at least, will save multiple drawings. I have one large drawing in particular that takes a long time to save; if it's loaded, you notice when that autosave kicks in.

Of course. You wouldn't want it to kick in while you are in the middle of a command. As soon as the timer expires, if you are in the middle of a command, the autosave is 'queued'. As soon as the command ends, it fires.

Thanks for the replies.
I try to get all my clients to set their automatic saves to at least 10 minutes, because more often than I'm comfortable with, they are asking me to be their comp. tech as well as their drafter.:D Thanks rkmcswain, that link you sent was helpful.
1. I didn't realize the ISAVEPERCENT variable should be set to "0"
2. The advice about creating a folder with WRITE permissions and not
DELETE permissions and having your automatic saves go to that folder is very good.
In hindsight I guess it's obvious why Autocad doesn't autosave when you are working..........
