View Full Version : Strange X-Ref problem

Hello, I'm using AutoCAD 2007LT but I also have access to AutoCAD 2005. The problem is this: whether in 2005 or 07LT; I have a title block drawing that I x-ref into my other drawings (for obvious reasons). This drawing has things in paper space (the title block itself) and some text in defpoints in modelspace (basic standards text). As of today, when I insert the title block as an xref into either 05 or 07LT in paperspace, it plops in the text from modelspace and not the title block. I tried making sure the file I was xrefing was saved while displaying the paperspace mode, I've erased all the text in model space, I've saved it into different formats, I've inserted the xref in 05 and 07LT but nothing I do will insert properly. What am I missing?

When you 'insert' an xref into a drawing, the entities within the xref itself will only be brought in IF they are on modelspace only.

Hmm, I will plop it into Modelspace for that work around. I do have other jobs/projects where it has inserted the paperspace objects into paperspace (but not the modelspace into modelspace OR paperspace) but your solution saves me a lot of grief... Why didn't I think of that? *sigh*

The thing to bear in mind with almost any software, that there is usually always more than 1 solution. Some may be 'better' than others. But if all roads lead to the same place, who cares where the road has come from.

You say you Xref it for obvious reasons, but the reasons aren't so obvious to me. It seems the easier solution would be to make that Xref a template instead and start new drawings with that template.

Norts, btw, you are correct and I was wrong there. Dunno what I was thinking putting the title block into paperspace to x-ref into other drawings. I must be overworked.

Crom, it would be much easier, I just haven't set it up that way yet and am not sure how to do that. I'd have to look it up and set it up on everyone's computer here. If you've got a link to a quick guide on that, it would certainly be a better way to go about it. Can I freeze things that are part of a template? Also, I would need to be able to change things that are part of a title block for each new project...

I didn't realize you were doing this in a managerial capacity. In that case, Xrefs are the way to go. By the way, you make a template by just saving a drawing as a .DWT in the pull down menu.

Thanks, I could still use a template to have all of our standard layers pre-loaded.

A template can have just about everything already loaded. I use one I made for architectural work that has layers, Dim styles and several other things, including title blocks and various legends and tables on it. Makes life much easier.

To expand on what Crom said, you can set that DWT (template drawing) as the default file to be opened when you start AutoCAD. We did this at my work because we used the same title block for all of our drawings. This may or may not be easier for your situation. Just another tip.

When creating titleblock ensure its drawn up in model space. But when you xref to the other dwgs it must go into paperspace
You can only xref title block that are drawn in model space only. Paperspace to paperspace ....??? i don't think so it'll work but just give it a go and see
