Another jolt from the vault...
After seeing one of Art Whitton's rendered drawings of a picture in a frame on his web site at "The CAD Guy" I've been trying to attatch a bitmaped photo onto an autocad solid model of a photo frame - without any success! I've been looking at the help files on Autocad but can't seem to get the hang of it. As a technical teacher in secondary school, this looks like it would be quite a motivational project for my pupils.
Can Anyone help?
Answer:
Mapping a picture onto a solid is fairly straightforward if you know how! There are two parts to the process. First you must create a new material using your chosen bitmap. You must then attach this material to an object.
If you look at Art Whitton's image, you will notice that the image is not attached to the frame. In fact, rather like a real painting the image is attached to a canvas. The canvas in this case happens to be a Region object but you can do the same thing using a 3D Face or a Solid.
To create the material:
Go to View/Render/Materials... and click on the New... button (making sure that the material type is set to "Standard"). Give the new material a name. Click the Find File... button and open the required image. Now, click the Adjust Bitmap... button. In the Map Style section, click the Fit To Object radio button and then OK. Click OK again to return to the Materials dialogue box. You should now see your new material in the materials list.
To attach the material:
Click the Attach< button in the Materials dialogue and select your "canvas". To see the effect, render the image using either Photo Real or Photo Raytrace.
One important tip. If you want your image to display with the correct aspect ratio, the object you are mapping onto must have the same aspect ratio as the image. For example, if your image is square, the 3D Face, Region or Solid you are mapping onto must also be square. The mapping will still work if the aspect ratio is different but the image will be distorted.
You can see the image/drawing in question here http://we-r-here.com/with/The-CAD-Guy/drawings/dwg_index.htm it's the one called "Two framed pictures ( with lights)". Art has made available all the drawing and image files required for download. Have a go, it looks great. :D
