I've been looking for a good general purpose web design book for my students and this week I discovered the perfect one. It's the Web Style Guide by Patrick J. Lynch and Sarah Horton. Now in its second edition, it covers all the basic theory behind web site and page heirarchy and layout. It includes sections on navigation, typography, images etc. But, best of all, the entire book (all of it) is available free on-line. Have a look at http://www.webstyleguide.com.
