Check this out as it comes straight from AutoDesk itself. For anyone running AutoCAD 2007 or 2008 this information might prove worthwhile:

I found that out the hard way, I was involved in a project that the size of the drawings grew so large that the system kept crashing on me. The solution? I am running AutoCAD 2008 in my computer with Windows XP Pro 64 bit...... Lots of RAM at my disposal!, no more crashes!

So what is the "3GB switch" and how do we implement it?

Go to your System Properties, and then the Advanced tab. Under "Performance" click the Settings button. Now go to the Advanced tab, and under Virtual Memory click the Change button. Now you can set your recommended memory size to 3067MB. :)

To enable to 3GB switch, you need to modify your boot.ini file.
