Hi Guys,

I'm using autoCAD 2006 in my new job and need some help!

I got some blueprint drawing that need lighting fixtures added to them. Now I used AutoCAD the first and last time 10 years ago so lots and lots have changed, plus I was using it for tool design not blueprints.

What I need it a way that I can design basic lighting fixtures and what not, so as I can just add them to the blueprints as each different print for each different project comes in.

I want to achieve: so as I dont have to redraw each time I have a new project.

Hope my explanation isn't to sketchy!

Thanks guys

Firstly welcome.

I think you need to investigate using BLOCKs. These are items that can be reused in as many drawings as you like. They can be drawings in their own right or exist withing other drawings.

Hi Loy

Firstly “Welcome”

There’s an old saying you only get out what you put in and that is very true of this melting pot of advice and ideas where you can be sure of a friendly helping hand along life’s long journey of AutoCAD.

Please don’t forget to introduce yourself to us all

Secondly try to help you are you after electrical symbols?

Once again welcome

em no not as such, I need to add symbols for street lamps, as this project requires.

But generally it will be electrical type symbols. We using LED lights, most of which are designed and manufactured by our selves. Are there some predawn symbol I can use, is that your thought?

On the drawing itself I only need a symbol, meaning no electrical details are required. The symbol is just to show the installers where they need to install the lights.

Hi Loy

You may well be drawing them yourself. But I asked the same type of question not so long ago so check out the link below you never know what you may find.

I also find the following link very good but I don’t know about electrical works but worth checking out.

One problem with asking for other peoples symbols is what standard they are being drawn to? There is a vast difference between UK and USA standard symbols, without any of the differences company standards may intoduce. I'm not sure what those in the southern hemisphere use but it could well be another set entierly. Many are similar but others are so different as to be useless.

Some symbols also have different meanings depending on the discipling being drawn so you will need to check your local standards anyway. You can almost guarantee that is something can be misinterpreted it will be.

Thats done the trick guys...Thank You all

I only need to draw a few circles of different colours and sizes to show the client the pool of light from a fitting. The Blocks have done their job.

Thanks again, and see you on my next project :D

Just a bit further, Loy......

Were you trying to draw lux lines from a street light ????? or something similiar....????

I'm just curious how you got a response from this thread if that is what you were after......:)

Sorry everyone....I'm just intrigued.......o:)

ahh yeah,

I worked out a formula in excel that calculates my lux levels achieved using our LED design we have inhouse. My formula gives me the spacing of each lighting in a sq meter room.

Does that make sence?

lol

One more question!

I've created a BLOCK but I didnt make a physical drawing in the BLOCK editor. I want to edit the block so how do I do that?

are you saying you defined your block from another drawing or you just selected items in the drawing using the BLOCK dialogue box?

There are several ways of making changes and the most suitable is slightly dependant on if you want to reuse the changes in other projects.

If the block is only defined in your current drawing you can make it into a drawing using the WBLOCK command. That block will then be availble to everybody. To update this sort of block you open the base drawing, make the changes and then INSERT that back into your drawing. You will be told the block already exists and asked if you want to redefine it. Answer YES and all instances of your block will be updated.

To only update a block in your drawing you should use BEDIT if you have any dynamic block functions or REFEDIT or BEDIT otherwise.

However you have defined your block please ensure that the base point is somewhere relavant to the geometry. Without this simple step you will find yourself in all sorts of problems some time in the future.

Dave.....

I know you have said before you are not good at explaining things.....but I have seen time and time again you go out of your way to explain in layman's terms how to do something.......and this is just another example of your ability....well done, mate......

And I take that crack at us being culpable criminals with a grain of salt.....we still play cricket....and we can still beat the c**p out of you blokes....

You think I was joking?

Actually I'm going to stay quite on this for the next few days. We start our series against the West Indies tomorrow. No predictions from me. :o

MORE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right so I draw the original BLOCK template on my 'model' screen, I highlight it, hit the 'Make Block' icon and convert it to a BLOCK. Once I exit the BLOCK editor my view is locked into zoom view of my block. I can't view the full drawing.

This particular CAD file was drawn in mm so the dimensions are (2.5mm = 2.5m), if that helps!

OK guys last question I promise!

How do I export the BLOCKS I've created to use with other drawings?

Loy

dbroada

type WBLOCK.

at the top you can create new external files from items on the screen or from existing blocks. Click on the "from block" option and you can select it from there.

I know this is "your" thread but it is probably more friendly to ask new questions in separate threads with sensible titles so that others can gain from them too.
