Hi Team

I remember going to a trade show in Birmingham UK many moons ago and seeing a demo of SU and yes I was impressed but knowing zero about computers let alone AutoCAD I thought no more. But a few years later I would like to know more and you guys are the people to ask.

:) Can I drawer from scratch and to size in SU.

:) Can I use drawings produced in AutoCAD in SU.

:) Do the drawings I import from AutoCAD need to be 3D.

:) I see there is a free down load version can this be used with AutoCAD.

:) I know you clever clogs out there have no trouble in using SU but but what about a dumbo like me

 Is Tesco’s, Virgin, eBay and Google taking over the world only you can’t turn round without being hit in the face by one of them.

Latest update 14.00hrs Sunday13/5/07

Just down loaded SU free version to have a play with it but the programme will not respond as this got something to-do with vista I was wondering.

Yes, you can draw from scratch with SU.

Yes, you can import drawings done originally in AutoCAD. No, I don't think they have to be in 3D.

You've found the only free download I'm aware of. Not sure about its compatibility with Vista however.

Taking over the world? No...that's for the military-industrial-complex.

I've got SU running on an XP based computer. What OS are you using? Vista?

Hi Re

Yes I am running Vista. I may need to look to see if there is an upgrade for the graphic card NVIDA GeForce Go 7300 I am also using a Lap top.

Been to see the local IT man and he suggests to wait until Bill Gates as realised the first major patch for vista which should be in June of this year.

Apparently Vista is really greedy and is slowing down Autocad so again I may after upgrade from one Gig to Two Gig.

At the this moment in time vista is a “PIG”

Hello Bespoke

As answered above, yes you can draw from scratch, to scale. You can import 3d or 2d autocad drawings. You can even use the autocad data as a group (block) in SketchUp to trace over then discard later.

Personally I love SketchUp for more than just Architecture. I do custom woodwork, mainly for myself but I have sold some stuff, and I design it all in SketchUp before I plane the first board.

As far as your trouble with Vista, I do not have experience with that. But here is a link to a thread on the SketchUp forum addressing the issue:

http://forum.sketchup.com/showthread.php?t=81126&highlight=vista

However, as you might have noticed, that site will go away soon so here are a couple posts from there that might help, hopefully.

1.---------------------

Hi guys, the problem you describe (hang on startup) is due to the video drivers on Vista, not SketchUp. Please check with the video card maker's website to get the latest Vista supported drivers.

Please look here for more information:

Also note from the Read Me of the latest maintanence release: SketchUp on a Core 2 Duo processor with a nVidia GeForce series 7 card will hang if started with the Vista provided driver. The latest driver from nVidia fixes the problem.

2.----------------------

Hi all,

There's a known issue with SketchUp where if you're running Vista, have an Intel core 2 duo, an Nvidia 7000 series video card, and you're not running the beta Nvidia Vista driver, SketchUp will hang at the learning center and Tip of the day.

The solution to this problem is to download the latest Vista Driver from the Nvidia site. Please be sure to pay special attention to the 8 step installation instructions

Let me know if this helps,
Thanks
Bil

Hi One and All

Still no go or still no start up.

Still can’t get past the first page. Have installed the latest driver tried feeding it on apples and pears even gave it a drop of my very special medication but still no good.

So I don’t know what the problem is but I do remember a member saying in his or hers native tongue vista translated in to chicken so I was thinking I could just have a chicken in stalled.

Yesterday I received an email from a company hear in the UK who many moons ago distributed SU in the UK I remember seeing in first at the NEC Birmingham some four or five years ago, at that time I picked up a demo CD
V 3.1 But I think it may be of interest other members so I have enclosed it as an attachment.

I will keep you informed of any further developments in the mean time please accept my sincere thanks for all the time and trouble you have taken in attempting to get me started with SU.

Hi One and all

Sit, sat, sitting here slowly going Ga Ga

Sorry Boo

The seventh cavalry didn’t come to the rescue this time alas but that’s life.

This is the latest update regarding Sketchup vies Vista

Been to the support page as recommended Boo and had a good read and this is what I saw.

SU will not play ball with vista with nVidia graphic cards and what graphic card as Alan got in his new laptop, give that man a coconut yes nVidia graphic card.

So the next port of call was to talk tech support at Acer and down load there very latest driver and still no luck in getting past the first page.

So vista must be a chicken like a fellow member as already stated, after all we know that Bill Gates and Google don’t like playing with each other so it makes you think. One of them as picked up the ball and gone home.

So it looks like down grading to XP or wait and as I don’t want to purchase a second licence I think I will wait after all I have done without it for many a year so it won’t matter if I after wait a little longer.

Have tried installing using The COMPATIBILITY mode. All I can say about that is that all hell broke out and I have spent the last two hours putting things back to normal using restore etc.

Sorry team I am raising the white flag on this matter.

Thank you all for trying to help me out but it looks like Bill and Google are having a wobbly with each other and need their heads knock together.

Boo

Thank you for your kind comments of my work yes I have a web site. I design, make and install including French polishing or lacquering and paint finish. I don’t do joinery just cabinetry and panelled rooms like the games room. The score board is hand etched / engraved bone markers on oak burr and solid brass markers. I designed the complete room including the fibre plaster ceiling; the only part I did not make and install was the fibre plaster ceiling , snooker table and the spiral stairs leading to the upper games room / scale-electric racing cars.

The bar as two bottle coolers [ small fridges ] glass washer and sink with gold plated tap and 40mm thick granite two level top with granite gobbles, back of the handmade brass grills you will find the 5:1 speaker’s .

Under the plasma TV is a window which overlooks the swimming pool.

When you turn on the TV two extra speakers drop down out of the ceiling automatically and return when the TV is switched off.

All the lighting and home entertainment kit is operated via remount control some 14 zones including the window dressings.

All the wood work is prime European oak [ don’t use American white or red ] and oak veneered manmade board.

I will dig out some more photos in the next few days and email them to you.

I work in most timbers but manly European oak it’s whatever the clients want but I don’t work in mahogany green peace won’t let me so I use cherry and polish it mahogany. I have exported display cabinets to the US and the land of OZ.

I only hope the above doesn’t make me sound big headed.

Once again thank you for all your help regarding SU.
