on other forums, when you receive a pm, a pop up appears as you are foruming to alert you to the fact that you have a pm

would CADTutor be able to add this facility to this forum with relatively little hassle?

It is possible. Click the "User CP" -the first link from left- and under "Settings & Options" click the "Edit Options". Scroll down to the "Messaging & Notification" and in the "Private Messaging" check the appropriate check box.
If you use a pop-up blocker be sure to make the desired settings to allow the pop-up window on this site.
