I have opened drawings sent by other cad users, but my version has adopted the layers used in these drawings, I now have over 40 unwanted and unused layers but am unable to delete them. How do I remove or hide them?

If you can't PURGE them, then they are referenced somewhere in the drawing. Could be a VPLAYER Freeze. Simply VPLAYER Thaw the layer and it is now purgable.
The problem comes in if a BLOCK in your dwg has an empty layer defined within it. I think SUPREPURGE from Owen Wengard can deal with it, but that's about the only way other than to export each BLOCK and manually check, purge and redefine. -David

I asked this question a few months ago. http://cadtutor.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1020&highlight=wblock Fuccaro suggested WBLOCK out the drawing and reinsert it in a new one to purge the unused layers. This was quick and easy, and worked fine!

many thanks thanks the redefining the blocks, then purging the unused layers worked a treat.
