I should have added one more choice - a mix of all three, which we have....

We have a mix of all three here as well. Next week we should be getting up and running on 2008. They did one computer Friday. :D

in the UK stand alone is all we are offered. The others exist but you have to push pretty hard to have that confirmed.

So what do you do when you have 50 seats to install, walk around with a CD and a S/N list?

You can setup a network deployment and have it automatically install on the users next login or they can run the deployment from the network.

So what do you do when you have 50 seats to install, walk around with a CD and a S/N list?Thinking about this I may have been mistaken. We have had to buy 8 stand alone licences (we are a small office) and have been "encouraged" onto the subscription service. This gets us one CD which we pass round and then each have to register with AutoDesk UK via the web. We have never been offered a network installation by our supplier. In general you tell the supplier how many seats you want and they tell you what is on offer.

Even on a network installation the software must be installed on each work station. The only feature that must be installed on the server is the network Licences manager.
On our DVD's in the US, there is deployment option. This is a nice feature that allows you to build one configuration and then install it to each computer from the server.

With all due respects, John......what happens in America regarding acad licensing is totally different to what happens in the rest of the world.......all because of a court case a long time ago in America......o:)

Yes, it is on our install CD's as well. Works pretty well too.

Alan,
So you are saying there is no deployment option on installation disk outside the the USA? Since I don't use them, I have no clue.

Alan,

Neither do I, John......what I was getting at is the whole issue of licensing in USA, as opposed to the rest of us......it is different.....so we have a situation where one issue that exists in USA does not exist elsewhere.....I guess what I was trying to get at is that a debate on licensing and deployment can't really be effective because of the differences that exist between USA and everwhere else....sorry if I just added to the confusion......just wanted everyone to realise that....now I will pick up my hat and walk back home......with my tail between my legs. :D
What I can say is that here......we get 1 set of disks for every license, and every machine has to be installed and authorised independently of every other one......:( even different autho codes.....

Thanks Alan, that was what I was trying to imply too. As subscription customers we now only get 1 disk but as you say, it has to be used on each machine and each machine has to be authorised independantly - and in some cases several times.

Believe me, John......you blokes do not know how lucky you all are......and as you said "Yuk...what a mess", all because of a court case a long time ago......that only applied to USA.......that is why USA cannot stop piracy within the USA....because the court case ruled it against your constitution to impose the use of dongles on US citizens........

Not if you have "stand alone" seats. That is what "dbroada" said.
A network deployment can only be used with MSSA or NLM

same in our office.
also AutoCad licences are more expensive here in the UK than they are in the US...work that one out!..around $2000 more per licence.

dongles are a hardware keys that go with the software.
Basically if a dongle is supplied with new software, the software wont run if its not plugged in.
Dongles used to be plugged into the serial ports...now they are USB.
dongles are mainly sold everywhere else in the world...they stopped using dongles with autocad here in the uk recently after version 2000.
A lot of 3rd party software vendors use them though.
do a search on wokipedia for dongle.

That's right, one of our old measuring stations a dongle 1 it's over 15 years old and the manufacture of the dongle can name there price if ever it were to break.
Where I work we only have 1 standalone licence that's for me as I'm the only one who uses Autocad and Inventor:)

We have standalone and network, the install is the same except you pick standalone or network at a particular point in the install, you must know where your newtork licence is held (which box).
I am interested in a network deployment though next time we have 8 here (our building) plus 5 elsewhere plus 3 network (all on one network)

This is the UK, scotland. We have 45 seats all run from the server, each pc, 60, can have IV/Acad installed but as you Open the software on the machine it checks the server to see if 45 are already opened. . So of course all my kids dbl click at the same time so it takes a while.
If you buy 20 seats you will be offered the Network version.
