Hi,
I am new to autoCAD and using v2008.
I have a vector image of an ordnance survey map and would like to cut out a small section and create a new, smaller map of a specific area, but can't seem to work out how to do it.
It can't be that difficult, but I can't see how.
Help! Before I throw my PC out the window.
Cheers

Draw a rectangle around that part you want....then write it out to a block (including the rectangle)......Then open that block and use the rectangle to trim all entities outside the rectangle.

Another good command that i had come across recently as well that might be helpful is MAPTRIM. You would draw a rectangle to start out with as Alan had stated. Then type in the command and the dialogue box is pretty self explanitory. Let me know if you have any problems with this action. Best of luck!

Many thanks, I'm getting an 'unknown command' response to MAPTRIM.

You will, unless you have AutoCAD Map.

You can use the wipeout command to "cut out" the area of the existing map and then put your new map section on top of it. You will need to make sure you layer every thing correctly for it to work, but it should give you the results you are looking for.

It sounds like the OP wants to draw a "hole" in his viewport.
If that's the case, then this tip I saved from some time ago should work.
" To create a viewport with a hole in it, first draw the outline of the viewport shape you want in your layout. Include the hole where you don't want the model space geometry to show through.
Use the Region command to convert the outlines to regions.
Start the Subtract command to subtract your hole from the container region.
Next, select View/Viewports/Object, and select the container region.
Your model space objects should appear in the container region, while the area that was subtracted appears empty."
Let us know what works for you.

I tried that MAPTRIM this morning.....works like a charm......something I have to do so often.....that now makes it easier for me.
Sometimes you just wish you could get the time to explore the software you are using.........
Edit.....just had a chat to the boss about getting time to learn each acad upgrade.....we'll see what happens.....
