Hey guys,

Im having to work with a project that i did a few years ago back when i thought it was best to XREF all my schedules, floorplans, and just about anything other than my devices and circuiting. I have since pulled most of this stuff into my main project file. I decided to do this after experiencing losses in production time from having to open, close, and reopen XREFs every time a change was made.

So anyways, im working with an old dog of a project that is rendering my computer useless while the project is open. Here are the file sizes....

Main project file 1.8MB
largest XREF 1.9MB
(46) other XREFs all between 10-930KB

So my question is why exactly does this project file bogg my machine down? Whats going on in the background? And also, if i were to have this project set up under my new organization wouldnt my machince bogg just as much? I assume my project file would be nearly 600MB, if not more.

OMG.....600mb??? And you're asking why it's bogging down your pc? That is way too large, do you have all that open at the same time?

The newer versions of autocad have a way of condensing the file size. This may or may not help if you save it all in the new version, but then again, it sounds like you are trying to open tooooooooo many dwgs at once.

Could you be more specific? What version are you using right now? How many drawings do you have open at once and how many xrefs are attached to these drawings? If the total size is 600mb, then the answer is that you have too much going on and your pc might crash under the weight.

the file is not 600MB, but has about that much XREFed into it. im using AutoCAD 2006.

this is not an extremely large project. it is large, dont get me wrong. but the reason the project weighs so much is the amount of text. as i understand it text increases files size much more than lines and objects.
