Used this now and again when Im on a PC that is running slower than it should, system resources play a big part in system crashes and slower running applications. It amazing how many people have their systems running loads of unessecary background programs.without knowing.

Hey Hyposmurf,
I went to that link but didnt have time to wade through it all to find
out how to shut down the unneccessary background stuff. Can
you direct me to the right spot?

What operating system you got 2000,XP etc?Remember that when using that site its tailored for a PC that is used mainly for gmaing, but you can take from it what you need.Let me know about your operating system and Ill run you through it.
I use this webpage to search for processes that are running on my PC,so that I can identify each one and decide whether or not to turn it off.click here (http://www.processlibrary.com/)

OK Hypo,
Dont laugh, Its windows 98.
Let me know if you need any other details on my computer.
I would like to turn off unneeded applications because I am allready
a little short on RAM. Maybe get a new one next year but for now Id
like to soup this one up a little.

I had endless problems with 98,moved onto 2000 and that was one massive breath of fresh air. That first website applies to windows 2K and XP,not 98,I dont think you can change the service configurations in windows 98.What you can do though is use the second website I posted above and open the MSCONFIG program.MSCONFIG is built into win 98.Got to Start - Run then type MSCONFIG and hit OKThen go to Start up tab and run down the list of prograns that are running on your PC.Search for the name on the left under Startup Item on that second website. You should be able to find most of them and you can read the descrition and decide which ones you can disable.Usually alot of programs will run in the background that use up system resources, disabling the unecessary ones should speed your PC and hopefully wont crash as much, mind you win 98 used to crash numerous times a day. :) Tell me if you can see the services tab at the top when you open MSCONFIG on win 98 been a while since I used it

Thanks Hypo,
Yeah, I could see the startup tab, and I turned a bunch of junk off.
My puter hardly ever crashes even though I have windows 98.
Once in a great while when I try to get too rowdy for it by closing
internet sites before they fully open and stuff like that it will freeze
up on me if thats what you mean by crashing.
Thankyou for taking the time!

You must be incredibly lucky or just opening one program at a time and not overloading your PC.We all had win 98 in our office and it was a familiar site to see someone cursing when theyre PC crashed and they lost some of their work.

True,
The most I ever really run at once is Acad , Photoshop, and my everpresent windows calculator. You guys with Acad, Bryce, Inventor etc
would probably be doing to my computer what the little guy at the bottom
of all your posts does
