I could open it if I chose not to run recover...have saved it again as a 2000 - hopefully you can open it now.

Did you try running recover on the drawing? In the future, open autocad and under File>Drawing Utilities>Recover or _RECOVER on the command line if a DWG file is open, if no DWG file is open then File>Recover. Select the file to be recovered and hit the OPEN button or press ENTER.

I tryed that and gave another error, instead of "Internal Error" its "Fatal Error" lol only Pefi could have saved me from this one.

It recovered fine for me. You can also try renaming the .Bak file to a .DWG.

I'm glad I was able to help! :)

Something was broken (even after recovery) but I was able to make copyclip & pasteorig to a new file.

I am having a similar problem. I had downloaded a file that was going to help me with title blocks having a connection to an Excel database file. After the download, I opened up autocad, and it was poised to the default Drawing1.dwg. When I tried to plot, I got the message:

INTERNAL ERROR: !laymgr.cpp@987:eWasOpenForRead

When clicking the okay button, the session was terminated.

This is only if I am in the default drawing Drawing1.dwg. If I open any other drawing, I am okay and the program acts normal.

I have tried recovery and audit, but no errors are found.
Would you please advise if you have any ideas to get this error eliminated?
Thank you.
Phil
