View Full Version : Purging a drawing?

I'm doing a drawing for some finicky company and they keep sending it back with more and more obscure demands. Does anybody have a clue what this means and how to do it?
"All construction layers should either be switched off or deleted. The drawing should then be purged so as to remove all entities which are not required."
Is there some sort of command that automatically cleans up a drawing. I'm not going to try and clean it up manually anyway because I haven't a clue which bits are expendable.
Another thing they're complaining about is that there are lines drawn on top of other lines here and there. Is there some fast way of checking this short of deleting lots of stuff at random and checking if there's a line lurking undernearth. Sod that.

The Purge command will remove any unreferenced entities from a drawing be they blocks, linetypes, text styles, etc. Give it a try. If you compare drawing file size before and after executing Purge you should notice a drop.
You can invoke the Purge command by:
1. Typing the word Purge on the command line then hitting the Enter key.
or...
2. Looking under File / Drawing Utilities / Purge.

There is also the overkill command on express tools.
that will get rid of duplicate lines etc.

Actually, if you look under Express Tools you won't find an Overkill command per se. You have to click on Modify then on Delete duplicate objects. When the command is executed you'll see the word Overkill on the command line. Or you can type Overkill at the command line instead of going through Express Tools. Either way, it is, as Cymro states, a way of deleting duplicate lines. Question to Cymro: Would the command still work if the lines were not quite the same? Let's say there is a small line segment than is buried under a longer one? Would the shorter line segment be deleted?

Hi Remark
I usually type overkill and thought it was tucked in the express tools pulldown somewhere I didn't check where  .
Yes the shorter lines will be deleted

I wouldn't call that finicky. I'd say that should be standard for any drawing.
If I'm sub contracting drafting work to someone I don't want the drawing coming back with all sorts of crap in it.
As standard I'd request that drawings be cleaned up, purged and audited. That goes for in-house drawings too.

I agree. Neat and tidy is part of a drafters job.
