I have a gap that i'd like to fill in, i don't want to clone any close edges b/c i have a feeling the vertrex(s) will get jumbled... so is there a way to close a gap?

attached is what i mean:

if you hit the edit menu, and change the object selection to vertices, you have the option to add new vertices to an existing object

well i appreciate the suggest, but i found that if i convert it to an "editable poly" i can select the "border" and "cap" it :D

Bridge is generally used to connect two separate, but Attached, objects together. Hence the term "Bridge". The best way to solve Ken's problem was to use "Cap", as he did, or to create a new Poly by clicking the "Create" button under the "Edit Geometry" rollout.

I personally don't use the "Bridge" tool. I find it to be a bit messy. I generally just create a new poly or extrude out an edge and then target weld. It's much cleaner that way.
