View Full Version : Displaying 3D objects as 2D objects?

I just had a job interview where I was basically asked to draw a simple aluminium block with a few holes in it as a test. The guy who was watching is retired and has always worked in 2D, and fair enough. He asked me to draw 3 views of the object. I started drawing in 2D with the hidden lines and stuff and was then allowed to draw it in 3D s I said it would be a lot quicker.
My question is, can you set Autocad up so it can display the object with hidden lines as dotted lines etc? I just created a few views in Paper Space displying it as a 2D wireframe..
any advice would be great.
Thanks
Dave

Here's roughly what I drew for them...

Well I found the Flatshot command, the only issue now is how do I display the flatshot in each viewport in Paperspace without it showing up in other viewports?

_SOLPROF and leave tangential edges on.

Set your Visual Style Manager so it shows hidden lines when in 3D Hidden mode. That will show hidden lines all the time.

Here is some _SOLPROF.

Think that's what I'm after. How are you getting dashed edges rather than solid lines, I've tried changing them in properties and on the Layers box but not having any luck...

SOLPROF creates two Layers for each Profile, a PH-xxx for Profile Hidden and a PV-xxx for Profile Visible. If you set the viewport for model space, the PH and PV layers for that viewport will be the only PH and PV layers thawed . You will want to Freeze all the other layers in that viewport to isolate the Profile.

So is SOLPROF an updated version of SOLVIEW and SOLDRAW? Those are the commands I usually suggest for showing a 3d object in traditional 2d format.

I use those as well, except _SOLPROF shows tangential edges, so I use that to give me a more realistic look at certain times.

_SOLDRAW and _SOLVIEW are excellent for when you need to do sections.

Cheers for your replies, I've thawed all the other layers but I still can't get the SOLPROF hidden lines to be dashed lines. I've tried changing them in the layers manager and in properties but they still appear as continuous. Could this be a glitch with AutoCAD? Maybe I need to re-install or something.
Here's the best I can get. I've used SOLPROF on the top right Isometric view..

They will probably plot just fine, sometimes I have hit regen all a few times to get them to show up. Make sure you are in 2D wireframe. Make sure the hidden linetype you are using is at the correct linetype scale.

Brilliant, sorted now, I wasn't in 2DHidden.
Thanks a lot
