... basically I have a conservatory on the back of a house, and I've just been iformed that the whole thing is going to be a foot lower than the planning application drawing shows it as, so I need to move the thing down... but SketchUp identifies the point at which the walls of the conservatory join the house as some sort of break point, and stretches the whole back of the house out of shape if I now move the conservatory
do I need to delete the house and start again?
( I know that can't possibly be true, but I'm not finding anything useful within sketchup to help me out :( )

well I don't know if there is an easier way, but I opted for copying the house away from itself, deleting the original, moving the conservatory down, then reattatching the house
I think I need to examine the use of groups :?

Components are the way to go. However you did the right thing with what you had.
Check out the video tutorials. Go through SU5 tut's first, #3, they are the basics.

The Component concepts (22) and Organizing your model (20) will help quite a bit.
