i'm looking for some good interior design software that will allow me to construct a set of technical drawings and then "dress" them up graphically for presentation purposes. i have 9 years experience with cadd, but i'm not sure what is a good software to use for this. recommendations?

Well to be honest, AutoCAD 2005 will do that. With the addition of the Gradient Fill in the Hatch command and the use of Super Hatch one can do juat about anything in AutoCAD that they could do in say Illustrator or Draw (almost but a few things are still not there yet). Now, Illustrator and Draw will also "dress: up a CAD file very well too.
Here is an example of using SUper Hatch as well as a FreeHand lisp to get a sketch effect.

Here is an example of a CAD file taken into Illustrator.

Here's another example I have posted many times to show exactly what can be done in straight AutoCAD.

f700es dude, that is exactly what my interior designer is wanting. she mentioned that effect that makes it look like a sketch. i'm just running acad 2002lt right now. is there any way i can run that lisp routine with it? or only 2005?

Cool, glad to help. Use that in r2002LT? Well, yes and no. No you can't by itself in 2002LT (LT versions cannot use lisp files or other custom add-ons) but with the addition of a LT "enhancer" I believe that you can.
This company sells LT add-ons that allow for the use of lisp files and such.

Their LT ToolKit Max might be what you want.

They have a demo version I believe so download it and then download the lisp file I posted and see how it works for you. Also you can find older versions of Corel Draw for much of nothing in price. It works like Illustrator and can do good things with 2D CAD files as well. I have seen CorelDraw 7 for $5 plus shipping. It can import a .dxf file or .wmf and then be "colored". Good luck and let us know how you get along :)

ok. i downloaded it and have been trying it out here at work with acad v2000. i'm having a hard time getting it to look as good as the one you posted above, but i'm sure i'll get it after practicing some. where would i look for an older version of corel draw at? that would be a good tool as well to "color" the drawing as you said.

Well I took the drawing in and on a new layer I did some solid hatching as well as some super hatching (using raster images) as hatch patterns (siding, brick and shingles). I then froze the layer that had the hatching on it. I then applied the freedhand effect to the other elements and then un froze the hatch layers. This gave it that kinda sketch look. I might try to get a tutorial together on this procedure. As for cheap CorelDraw versions..
well..
Here is CorelDraw 7 for $5..

It is in the Bonus or Express Tools which have been in since r14. You have to have the full version BTW and not LT. But that same website I sent you to also has a Express Tool add-on as well.
One thing I really don't like about AutoDesk. They want LT to be a leader in the 2d CAD world yet they do not include the SuperHatch nor the Gradient Fill commands in the latest version. Pretty stupid to ask me.
