I think it's best if I show you this. How do I remove the parts of the cylinder that should be sliced by the 3 faces of roof?

Select the items, right-click and then select in the pop-up window "intersect" and then "intersect selected". This will break up the items so that you can erase them as needed.

I'm trying to make this into a finial, have you got any other tips for commands I may not yet have come across?
eg- can I smooth the edge off what I have so far?
then I've got an intersected cone and sphere to plonk on top of that

Sure, select the items and right click and use the smooth command. See if that helps. Also turn off those dashed lines - View and uncheck hidden geometry. See if that makes it look better.

ah - I was wondering what I'd done there, but I did put hidden geometry on on purpose. I'll take it off when I've finished :)
*goes to investigate this SMOOTH thing*

oh GRRRRR!!!!! I hate this program
I can't get it to make a sphere now - the flaming rotate function WILL NOT work on any plane other than the one IT WANTS, and why on earth would anybody want to rotate a circle about its centre in the plane it's already drawn in? :?
the damned help menu is so set on making things look easy that it is completely useless for problem solving (great having the most perfect CAD prog on the planet that never 'loses' faces or decides FOR you what it's prepared to do or not :x )

You might have to rotate your view untill you get the rotation axis that you want. When you get it hold down shift to lock the axis. You are wanting a red or green axis, correct?

I actually think that it's covered in one of the tutorial videos, I think. It's almost second nature to me. I've been using SU since v2 and it's like breathing, you don't simply think about it. Glad that it helped you :)
Oh, you can call me Sean. Most people here do anyway.

thanks Sean :)
Can I stick with Strix as it's a real life nickname of mine anyway?
(and besides there's a hyperlink to here from a forum with some insane people on it :shifty: )
