So the company I work for put me in charge of handling the purchase of a plotter and all that fun stuff. The plotter is made by OCE and is around the range of $9000.

The representative/salesman is coming in today to go over the information with myself and another gentleman and we are probably going to purchase the plotter within the next few days.

I have to set-up everyone's CAD to be able to plot to the plotter (well at least this is what i've now been in charge with). Our IT kid, is just that, a kid who messes around with computer and just so happen to pick up a few things along the way... he has little CAD experience, yet being the company's "IT guy" he feels the need to set up the plotter on all the computers.

My question is (and the IT kid can't seem to grasp this) but if i'm going to be the CAD Manager here, shouldn't I have administrative control on the plotter? Meaning: shouldn't I be able to oversee and confirm anything before it's plotted? I have a feeling that some of the guys here are going to get greedy and want to plot every drawing they have under the sun, and I know they are going to mess something up...

My other issue is that some guys here have AutoCAD LT, 2002, and 2006, so i'm wondering if the "standards" will be useable/universal for all three versions?

Eeeehhh, the fun of office politics eh.

I figure that if you want it doing properly, ensure you do it yourself.
If you want to 'play the game', let IT guy do it. When his implementation fails, you can say 'told you I should have done it' to him, his boss, and your boss; thus ensuring you get extra brownie points.

First of all though, I think you should discuss this with your boss, or immediate supervisor; to highlight the difference of opinion.

I am over our plotter here. the IT guy doesn't even think about touching it.... I handle all the service calls, the errors, changing the toner, the paper, etc. Tell him what's up. this is your office now.

remember this.... only the CAD operators get use out of a large scale plotter. now, if he wants to take the job of mr. IT guy that handles everything, then tell him he's 100% in charge of the plotter from now on. lol, that'll mess with his head a bit....

I have a seperate network domain and I have administrator privilidges over the entire domain, which includes administrative responsibilities for the plotters and printers. If the equipment is only going to be used by the CAD department and you are in charge of that department, you should have administrative rights over it.

Tell him (and your bosses) that him being the IT guy means that he is responsible for setting up the network to meet the needs of the users, not his.

I have told my (and our IT guy) bosses countless times, but they refuse to listen. It's hard work I tell ya.

I'm also over the plotter, I have it in my office, so I handle everything related to it, though I'm the IT guy too.

Anyway I think you should be in charge of the plotter.

The CAD manager controls the plotter and handles all related issues including ordering supplies, having the service tech come in and setting the plotter up on the various CAD machines. Tell the freakin' IT to go pound sand!

Jeez - the very idea!!!

Tell him he can be in charge of plotting every single drawing, loading the new paper roll, changing the ink, and troubleshooting the AutoCAD settings whenever they naff up from a drawing somebody else sends you and he'll be bored of it in two days

FFS - a plotter is a piece of drawing office equipment, not an IT toy :x

well the plotter will be in my "office" and i've spoken with the plotter salesman and asked their tech about setting up the plotter so that i have 100% control of it... another thing is that our IT kid is going to be traveling the week they set things up  and if he decides to be there and wants to basically take control of it....

then by all means, i'm not going to get my undies in a twist over it, if he wants control he can have it, so that means when it needs service, when it needs toner.... he'll be getting phone calls, and when it's not done... welp, he's in charge, so it's on him.
