How do I get a BOM to list component dimensions ie. length width and thickness?

You need the parameters of the 3d model, or do you mean the 2d sketch data? not sure on your question?

If one of the components was a plank, length 5000mm, width 200mm and thickness 20mm, how do I get these three dimensions to appear in the BOM?

When you place the BOM on the drawing, double click the description and type it in.

Surely there is some way of automating this procedure? All the information is there in the component properties, cant it be linked to the BOM?

I'm am sure there is, I don't use Solidworks but I have seen it at demo's etc, so I am very limited my what I know, I think I need to give seasoned SW users on this forum a nudge!
