Hello,

I am still an autocad student. I am working with version 2008. The project I currently am working on is a basic floor plan. I have abosutely no CAD or constrution background.

I would like some advice on layers. I'm just wondering how indepth do I get with them. Should I have a layer for exterior walls and a serperate one for interior walls? They're both going to be drawn with the same line weight so do I assign each layer the same color? Or is that a huge no-no?

Or do I do just use one layer for all walls?

Any info or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Many American architectural firms tend to follow AIA guidelines but these can be cumbersome for a small scale project. You may want to limit the number of layers you use. Obviously, your layers should include: walls (interior and exterior), windows, doors, symbols, dimensions, notes, title block and border just to name a few. Will you be doing everything in model space or will you be using layouts (model and paper space combined)?

I tend to put different physical entities (eg. externtal / internal walls, doors, windows, fllor slab, etc) onto their own separare layers.
at the outset of any drawings i believe it is always more efficient to create layers in this way.
further down the line you may feel the need to rationalise layers, but you always have the base starting point of all hte layers in the first ever version of your dwg file if you do it this way

I was taught to use model space. However I was just reading in the forum about people who prefer to dimension in paper space; which is a completely foreign concept to me. (It does sound more efficient) But exploring that issue will have to wait.
Thanks for the advice. I’m just trying to produce the most efficient drawing possible and I think I was over thinking things.
