Help Needed!!!! -AutoCAD is slow reacting

Recently my ACAD has started acting up, when i open a drawing regardless of size, and try to select an object it takes ACAD 7 to 8 seconds to select the object,this only happens with pre-existing objects in the drawing, if i draw an object myself and try to select it theres no problem.This is causing me considerable grief and if anyone could help it would be great!
