Did you "Set Current" and then "Dimension Update"?

yup set current and then drew a fresh dimension. Everything else seems to have changed, my arrow sizes and stuff. but not text. when I go to properties on the dimension it says that the text size is at 50 But it's not It's massive.
Am I going insane?

The text style you're using has a set height (command STYLE)... either use another style with the height set to zero or change the one it's set to to zero :)
