(autocadd2002) I am having trouble getting USGS quad maps to orient themselves when I insert them into a drawing. I have to scale and rotate them to two or three GPS points I have collected. This is not as accurate as I would like. Does anyone know how to get these quads to come in to the correct scale and orientation?????

Have you tried ALIGN?

Yes. This is only good when you have known points already in the dwg. I can do this now. What I need to know is how to get Autocadd to recognize the actual coordinates linked to these quad maps and automatically insert the quad map to the correct orientation without me having to 'align' it. I have seen this done before but do not know how to set it up for me to do.

Oh, gotcha. I'm not sure if cad can recognize World files associated with geo-tiff rasters (like GIS software can). Acad Map might do it - I'll look into it...

2 Q's:
1. Do you have world files for each topo?
2. Do you have ArcView?

I do not have an arc viewer, but I beleive all the files are here...I downloaded every quad in PA from PSU as zip files... there are many files associated with each quad...the quads themselves are imported as TIFF files.

Go to the following link and download GeorefImg.vlx. You'll need the .tfw file (aka World file) associated with the Quad. Since most .tfw files are in metric coordinates so you'll need to scale the image by a factor of 3.28084 (base point 0,0) to get it in UTM feet.

I LOADED THE APPLICATION AND IT WORKS GREAT!!!!!!

i HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE THIS ONE OUT FOR WEEKS...THANK YOU!!!!!!!:D

First, make sure the .tif file and the .tfw file are in the same folder.
Insert the image of the quad (anywhere, at any scale, the app will move and scale it)
Load the GeoRefImg.vlx file using Appload... alternatively you can load it by typing (load "georefimg") if the .vlx file is in autocad's support path.
After loading, type Georefimg to invoke the command. Follow the prompt.

I use ArcGIS (from ESRI) for GIS stuff, but I tried it with AutoCAD Map and it did work. The .tfw is the world file that tells the tiff where it belongs. If you insert the tiff as a raster, you can align the top left corner by the coordinates in the world file. What I'm not sure of is how to scale the tiff correctly?
I'll play with it more tomorrow...Gotta run now.

**Been beat to it!
Better solution anyway!

The Quad Comes In In The Wrong Place? I Checked This Against My Gps Coords And They Do Not Fall On Top Of One Another. Is There Something I Am Doing Wrong?

I would imagine that the GPS coordinates are State Plane. I think the .tfw is in UTM. If you look in the .text and/or .html file that came in the .zip file, you'll find the UTM zone.
Look here for a way to convert.
