View Full Version : Trouble with an x-ref

I'm having trouble with an x-ref. It apparently has multipal references (that he didn't send me), and so all of these end up as "Not found" in the external references box. When I attach it to my own drawing, I get alot of file paths here and there refering to these external references. I thought I could open the x-ref and detach these "Not found" files, but it won't let me, saying that "X-ref RS400-250 has multiple references. Not detached."

Can I solve this...?

Yup... go into the xref .dwg file & into the XREF dialogue... this should contain a list of files similar to the one in your drawing. You'll notice that these are all ATTACHED... simply change these to OVERLAYED & it won't attempt to bring them in when you xref in this file. This is good practice unless you specifically want xrefs brought along with your file, whatever drawing you're working on.

If you need the nested files you will have to have them sent to you.

I am having a similar problem, however the file that I am xref-ing does not have any xrefs in it and the type is overlay not attach. I can unload it and reload it, but it will not allow me to detach it and gives me the same "has multiple references. Not detached." message. Anyone have any ideas?

I think what's happened is you have at some point copied the xref in your drawing... this was either frozen off, scaled down, exploded or deleted (instead of detached) & your drawing still thinks it's there. Try purging it out or reloading it before you detach & make sure there's not a copy of it somewhere in the file.

Thanks for the advice, Hedgehog . . . I did thaw all layers, turn all layers on, purge the dwg and reload before detaching to no avail. However, I did finally get the problem resolved (after 2 hours or more) by copying everything in model space to a new dwg, deleting it from the original dwg and purging it before it would let me detach it. Thanks again.
