Hi All,

I'm a Autocad user and I have no idea how Solidworks works!

I have some basic questions about Solidworks(actually I'm thinking for buying this program if it suits us):

1) if you have both Autocad & Solidworks, for creating a solid and then editing it(In Autocad as you know I use subtract, union and ... for editing and sometimes it's really confusing) which one do you prefer?

2) and what about engineering things? for example if you want to create a solid and then put loads on it and see the stress profile or deflection and things like that. does it accept E modulus for a solid and then calculates other things?

3) the final question is about the price! What's the price in compare with Autocad(we have Autocad 2008)? and dose it have different specific versions like Autocad LT 2007 and Autocad 2007 full !

Thanks in advance and sorry about these basic questions

Hi All,
I'm a Autocad user...

Autodesk Inventor and SolidWorks are essentially the same in terms of functionality for most users. Inventor includes AutoCAD for free to help in the transition.

For mechanical design SolidWorks (or Inventor) beat AutoCAD hands-down.[/quote]

2) and what about engineering things? for example if you want to create a solid and then put loads on it and see the stress profile or deflection and things like that. does it accept E modulus for a solid and then calculates other things?
Solidworks comes with a very basic COSMOS Express for analysis. There are additional cost upgrades for both Inventor and SolidWorks for analysis.
These are complex programs that while I find easier to use than AutoCAD they require a professional level of training. I would not purhase the full analysis packages until the basic program is well understood.

3) the final question is about the price! What's the price in compare with Autocad(we have Autocad 2008)? and dose it have different specific versions like Autocad LT 2007 and Autocad 2007 full !

I couldn't find a link to the SWX prices but my understanding is that they are roughly equivalent. These are US $ prices.

Keep in mind that AutoCAD, AutoCAD Mechanical and Autodesk Mechanical Desktop is included for free with Inventor. Expect to pay about as much on training as you spend on the software, and you might need to upgrade your hardware.

Yes that is what we did, we bought Inventor, the great thing was we also needed Autocad, so for the company I work for it was a welcomed bonus.:)

Hello guys,
Can anyone suggest me about Solid Works tutorials on internet?

First go to Help>Tutorials and do all the built in tutorials. Then check the following
http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/content/DSG322/SolidWorks_surface_tutorials.htm

and search Google for Mike Wilson SolidWorks and Ed Eaton Curvy Stuff DiMonte Group.

That should keep you busy for a while.
