I've been doing a bit of research on the topic and it seems that a fair few people would like this as an option. AutoDesk seems to be testing the waters a bit but there's no firm signs as of yet.
Interestingly, these guys (http://www.engcom.net/engineering/view/1156/) seem to feel similar and have some interesting points.
