View Full Version : Program Crashing

For some reason my machine/ program hates me and likes to crash when I have nearly finished a drawing. I have autosave set up but for some reason, when it crashes (usually citing 'fatal error') it decides to take all the autosaved info to the grave with it.
Any suggestions how I can remedy this and have the autosave go to the server instead of what appears to be the program's internal memory?
Also, any ideas why this could keep happening? Im not a bad person....

One setting I always check is the windows swap file or virtual memory. Look at control panel and system or My compter and properties. Advanced, advanced. The swap file should be set at maximum, that is 4096Mb, I think. Use this value for initial size and maximum size. It may help, and it won't hurt.

Are you getting a dialog that says something like "AutoCAD cannot continue, do you want to save changes?"

Sometimes, and that isnt so bad. Its when it just freezes up and/or closes the program saying something like 'unauthorized handling error', or 'access violation' or general 'fatal error'. It shuts itself down and all is lost from the point of initially opening the file.

Did you check the swap file / virtual memory?

Right click on My computer.
Select Properties.
Look at the Advanced tab.
Click on Settungs under Performance.
Look at the Advanced tab (again).
Click on Change under Virtual memory to change the page file size.
Set both initial size and maximum size to 4096.
Click Set and then OK.
You may have to restart your computer.
This MAY help, and it will not to any harm.

Go to Tools>Options>Files>Automatic Save File Location this will show you where the SV$ files are saved to, you can also change the path to your desired location.
Do you have a specific actions that causes the error?
Go to Autodesk and make sure you have all the latest service packs and hot fixes.

Note that AutoCAD deletes autosave files upon a successful close of the application. The question is what does AutoCAD consider a "successful close"?
If you get the dialog that says "AutoCAD cannot continue, do you want to save changes?", the autosave files will be deleted.
Save and save often is the only way.... :)

True, very true, I was just pointing him in the direction of how to change the location of SV$ files, there is no substitute for saving. :D
