Just found this site and wanted to say Hello to all my fellow CAD Managers. What a grand job you all do..very important and ever so slightly crucial to all well run CAD offices! OK. B.S. over, Im hoping I can get some help regarding the age old, never to go away subject of CAD standards...
Why cant we all get together, have a sumit meeting somewhere hot and sunny, with plenty of sand and sea...Where our employers foot the bill, and thrash this out once and for all?..eh?..C'mon..We must all have a set of these standards in some form or another..
Failing that, can anyone send any relevant info they think may be of use to me and my quest?
I am half way through developing mine and would value any (positive) 8) input

Cheers me Dears

somewhere hot and sunny, with plenty of sand and sea

I can provide that location, you just have to keep an eye out for the crocs.

Lynne, this has been discussed at length, to no real conclusion. Basically, every office has its own standards, and they differ from office to office. If you get a new bloke in, he will always work to the standards he is comfortable with, until he learns a new set of rules. So it is an ongoing thing. If you are the boss of standards, then get ready for a long hard slog ahead, with no friends at work. A big stick helps here. o:)

On the other issue, get onto all the bosses and organise a summit, I'll be there. Two hours per day talking summit issues, 10 hours a day catching up with everyone and getting on the ****.

At the end of the day return to work and tell the boss that standards do exist, they just vary from office to office. But I made a lot of new CAD mates, and we all keep in touch. o:) :P

Hello Lynne!
I can't say anything new; as you said, this is an endless theme. The reason I write is to ask you to use relevant thread names for your posts. Good members will search the old posts when they encounter a problem and good thread names can help them a lot.
As you can see I renamed this thread.
Oh, and welcome in the forum!

Thankyou Alan. I have taken onboard your comments..Not sure about the Croccodillos though..Do you not think two hours CAD discussions per day is a little excessive?

Thank you for the welcome Fuccaro. I will try to be more responsible with my thread themes from now on in.

Lynne,

Don't get too despondent with Miklos's advice. It is actually a problem we are all going through here at the moment. Not that we are looking for answers, more that we are trying to recover old threads to help answer questions from new members. And bad thread titles are causing problems. Call it the "wish for" standards of CadTutor. See, even our standards don't work as often as we'd like.

Do you not think two hours CAD discussions per day is a little excessive

Nah. Wake up hungover. Then sit down for two hours discourse on CAD standards, while we all recover. Then after two hours, it's back to the bar.

Oh, yeah, welcome to the forum. Go visit the Chat area, and please do join in. That is where all the fun really happens. And if you feel inclined, introduce yourself in the "introduce yourself" area. That way everyone will know you are here. It's a great ice breaker.:D

Lynne,

there has been a big push lately for all offices to 'conform' to the NCS (National CAD Standard) which covers all disciplines from ARch, Civil, Mechanical etc. And to some degree I guess that is a good thing but as mentioned in numerous threads, it is really difficult to have all offices of every firm go to this. There are guys so stuck in the old days of coding their layer names that they will refuse to change. In some circumstances it just isn't profitable to make that kind of move for a few reasons. The first and formost is that the NCS is not free and rather expensive. Then you have the lead time in training and learning the new standard. Then consider the effort and time in changing all the existing blocks that would nee to be changed.

A common standard, no matter how nice it may seem, will never happen. If you are looking to create a standard within your company, I just want to let you know you are not alone. There are many threads with many opinions. Find one that fits your processes and begin to create your own. When you need advice, there are forums like this one where folks from all over the world are willing to offer their two cents.

Hang in there and let us know how you are doing!
