View Full Version : 3dsout not available in 2008

AutoCAD 2008 doesn't recognize the "3dsout" command - not when I type it, at least. 2006 understood it. Ironically, 2008 understands the "3dsin" command. Is this because I'm using a trial version of 2008? How can I make use of the 3dsout feature?

Hi,
they've discontinued the command because the present 3D Studio ie. MAX reads DWG and thus the 3DS-format is going out... I don't have MAX so cannot test this but I hear this really works great. If you're using an older version with no DWG-support, there's always STL, available via the EXPORT-command.

Well, that's just great - I don't use MAX, I use a program called ChiefArchitect and it needs 3ds files. How do I produce them in AutoCAD 2008, or do I have to get a another program to do that? How about a lisp program that I can upload into 2008?

Hi,
did some digging:

A utility to generate 3DS-files from 2007/8 DWGs

Yeah, I tried that approach too. Everything seemed to work OK, I was able to add the application, but AutoCAD still didn't recognize "3dsout". I don't know what else to do.

Hi,
did you read the readme? I did this: Downloaded the 32 bit file, excecuted it and selected a folder for the files that is in my AutoCAD searchpath (Options--Files--Supportfile Search Path).
Then I loaded the Ac3DSOUT.arx -file from the folder I extracted it to using appload. After Loading it I also added it to my Startup Suit so I won't have to load it ever again.
After doing this it works.

Are you sure it is in your search path?

Yes, I added it. It might just be because I've got a trial version. Really should purchase it soon.

I am on AutoCAD Map3D 2008 - Windows XP.
I needed to export to .3ds format and found the link to the re-install of the 3DSOUT command. I downloaded the 32 bit version - it didn't work - I downloaded the 64 bit - still nothing.
I am using APPLOAD and the Ac3DSOUT.arx file is in the right location (at least that's what I believe) C:\Program Files\AutoCAD Map 3D 2008.
It tells me that the file was "Unable to Load" and hence the 3DSOUT command is still not recognized.
What am I missing? I don't want to blow a bunch of time on this and I really need my model converted NOW!
I can post up as many versions of the .dwg/.dxf file of the model as needed - but at this point I don't think that the model is the problem, I am still thinking it's the program itself.
I even tried to copy the .arx file from a temp location instead of installing it directly to the C:\Program Files\AutoCAD Map 3D 2008 location.
Bupkiss.
Please help - what am I doing wrong?
First I went here:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=9481286&linkID=9240618
And here is the READ ME:
http://images.autodesk.com/adsk/files/readme_3dsout.html
Seemed pretty straightforward to me, but I am still getting nothing.
Ohh and I should add; since it will not load the .arx file - it also will not allow you to place the file into Start-up...
