I tried to import a model from Autodesk Architecture (architectural desktop) 2008 into Max 9 with the materials applied, but they only the solids came through. Is it possible to bring materials from architecture 2008 into Max 9, with or without them being attached to a model?

You will need to reapply your materials in Max. They will not come through when you import the model. Go to your Options dialog to find out where your textures are located.

Thanks for your reply. Can I just drag and drop entire materials form whichever directory in Architecture, into a similar folder in Max, and they will work perfectly?

I always create a folder called "Materials" inside my project folder. This is where I keep all of the textures that I'm using on my model. You could copy and paste the Autocad jpg's into that folder so when you go to Max, you will be able to easily browse to that folder to find them. Then just stick them in your material slots and apply them to the model.

How familiar are you with Max and materials? You will probably need to map your UV's on the model before applying the textures. Here's a pretty good tutorial on UV mapping: http://waylon-art.com/uvw_tutorial/uvwtut_01.html
