I get a fatal error when I bring up the change properties dialouge box and then click on dimension text......Auto Cad cannot continue.

I do this because I sometimes get in a hurry and forget to change to my dimension layer before dimensioning objects. Anyway,I now know better then to try to change the text layer with Change Properties command.

What is the correct way to move dimension text and other text to a different layer than it was created in?

-Frank.

If you already have all the text selected just open the drop down layer toolbar and select the layer you want it on, then close it (don't escape!), and everything selected will be on the layer you chose.

There are probably better ways, just to keep you going 'till someone else pops along...

Thanks, GE. I tried that this arvo, and it works a treat. I was pleasantly surprised. A GOOD trick. :D :P

MP (match properties) - the button with the brush on - also works, if you have one dimension that is on the correct layer. Beware that it changes some other settings as welll, like text size and orientation and so on.

I had this same problem. I submitted a tech support issue through subscription. Turns out I had to completely uninstall and reinstall the program. Using the repair feature wouldn't fix it but the reinstall did.

also works in properties toolbar, ie color, linetype, linewidth

Selecting objects and then opening the drop down layer box seems a lot easier then reinstalling Auto Cad.

If I did decide to go the reinstall route.....Is there a way to save my current drawings? What about my preferences?

I dread the thought of re-setting the way I keep my screen and options and dimension preferences

Your drawings will not be affected by a reinstall, you can save your profile in _OPTIONS, Profiles Tab Export. Save it to your hard drive, but not in your Acad directory. You can also export your dimstyles, Express>Dimensions>Dimstyle Export...
