Hi, i was wondering whether would it be possible to use AutoCAD 2008 to trace the outline of a complex illustraton? The picture is a mystical chinese dragon, thus i was wondering would AutoCAD 2008 be intelligent enough to perform an auto-trace? If not i would perform a manual trace, am i right? hope to hear from the experts soon thank you.

This topic has been discussed a few times in the past, Have a look on similar topics at the bottom of this page.

Also have a search on wintopo. I haven't used it but a few on the forum have.

As Cymro stated, this exact topic was discussed only a few weeks ago: Need Help Tracing an Image (http://www.cadtutor.net/forum/showthread.php?t=18780).

There is no "Autotrace" in Autocad. You could use a 3rd party raster to vector program, but I haven't had much luck doing that. It's really hit and miss, and a lot depends on how clean your image is. This image is very complex and I think the conversion would be quite a mess. It all boils down to what you ultimately need this design for? If it doesn't need to be done in Autocad, then use a different program like Photoshop or Corel with a graphic tablet or trace it manually on paper.

yea lebron get a raster to vector plug in for autocad. Or, you can use Maya or 3ds max, they both do this function very well.

 They do?
I don't know about Maya, but I have Max 9 and I can't find any raster to vector conversion utility anywhere. Can you tell me where it is? I would like to try it out.

Mike you are free to list and talk about any software you want. What we do not like are people coming in here and SPAMMING the forum about "their" software and not adding to the discussions. Please, tell us what you used. I actually threw your jpg into Illustrator 10 and played with it's trace function a bit. I hope your solution was easier ;)
