import line and layers

AM ON A DWG. THAT I NEED TO MAKE STRIP MAPS FROM
(oops caps lock) the client sent me a cadd example however My linetypes and layers do not match the examples I need to use the Linetypes and layer set from the example how do I import the linestyle type and layers into my drawing without having to substitute, and will the layers be the same names after importing with regards to style type and color

First, I'd save a copy of what they sent you.
Then draw a legend for yourself in that copied dwg.
Copy/Paste the legend into a new dwg and all the linetypes, layers, text styles etc that you used in the legend will come in.

I'm sure there are other ways...
