External References Disappear when Binded

I use a part library of external references to create assembly drawings. Since I've been using AutoCAD LT 2008, the external references disappear when thay are binded to a drawing. I typically do this to create derivatives of current parts to keep from redrawing entire parts. This was never a problem in previous versions and I'm at my wits end. I always purge the the ER before saving them. Is there anyway to fix this?

Is there a reason your attaching them as xref's & then binding them?... wouldn't it be easier to just insert them?... if you've tried this do they still disappear?
