how do I begin to draw spirals or corkscrews

This has been covered by me, non-lisp and others using lisp.

Use the SEARCH option at the top left of the forum menu.

I bascially construct a box containing the extents of the spiral
then draw a line and extrude a profile.

Although it's automatic in inventor. See my post in the 'Autodesk Software' topic.
